The newcomer to the Canary Island of Lanzarote is the resort of Playa Blanca on the island’s most southerly coast. That old story of an original fishing village developing into a busy holiday resort rings true here too and Playa Blanca is now an important resort, adding to Lanzarote’s already successful visitor centres of Puerto del Carmen, Matagorda and Costa Teguise. A 9 km stretch of beach has helped to grow the resort and the regular ferry service to another Canary Island, Fuerteventura, hasn’t hurt either. Playa Blanca holidays do have a local flavour still even though it has a smart marina and fashionable shops and restaurants.

On Lanzarote’s southern coast, the soft sandy beaches of Playa Dorado, Playa Flamingo and Playa Blanca host holidaymakers from all over Europe all year round. So, this once unknown village is now a holiday hotspot with its sophisticated Marina Rubicon, (about a 15 minute walk along the promenade), teeming with mega expensive boats and yachts, dripping with affluent clientele. What’s nice about Playa Blanca holidays though is that it has a long memory - it still has local bars and bodegas where you can sip a St Miguel and eat a few tapas. Belong to the municipality of Yaiza (from where the super 5 star family hotel, Princess Yaiza takes its name), Playa Blanca is a sleepy enough resort by day and the beaches see most of the action. By night, open air cafes are jammed and the restaurants start to heat up their barbeques.

A current, valid Passport is necessary for all visitors to Spain. Irish citizens do not need a visa.

The best thing to do on Playa Blanca holidays is to take an excursion up north to Timanfaya National Park – it is the scenery that makes Lanzarote famous. Board the local ferry and sail over to Fuerteventura for a day trip to explore another Canary Island.
