Lanzarote’s main holiday resort and one which the Irish have loved for years, Puerto del Carmen holidays are a Canary Island staple. The huge sandy beaches that run all along from Playa de los Pocillos through Matagorda to Puerto itself are dark sand with warm water from the Atlantic licking and foaming at the edges. Only a short drive from Arrecife airport, nothing in Lanzarote is too far away, so Puerto del Carmen accessible to the other towns and villages on the island. Typical of many holiday resorts, Puerto de Carmen started its life as a humble hamlet used by the local fishermen as the harbour was a natural, deep and sheltered port. The Old Town has great atmosphere and in the newer part, there are more bars and restaurants and shops than you’ll have time to discover in a short holiday.

The Old Town of Puerto del Carmen has the harbour where a slipway still enables the boats to come and go and, when darkness falls, the local restaurants fill up and the whole place teems with atmosphere. A couple from Galway run a posh eatery and a fella from Donegal runs a great pub, so you needn’t feel too far from home on your Puerto del Carmen holidays. The beach is wide and long, so you don’t have the “beached seal” syndrome during the day. Enjoy a laid back, relaxed day sunbathing and pop up to one of the open air cafes that line the promenade for a coffee and some shade from the sun. The resort is quite hilly as it slopes up from the seafront, but the buildings are all low rise and easy on the eye.

A current, valid Passport is necessary for all visitors to Spain. Irish citizens do not need a visa.

One of the best things to do on Puerto del Carmen holidays is to take an excursion to Timanfaya National Park to view the incredible lunar landscape and see the hot geysers still spewing steam. Go to the local Sunday market in the resort of Costa Teguise.
