Alicante is well known as the capital city of the Province of Alicante and as the landing port for tons of European flights bringing visitors to the busy tourist resorts of Benidorm and Albir. However, Alicante holidays are becoming more popular and the city hails as one of Costa Blanca’s top tourism earners. A great harbour, long waterfront and piles of history have moulded Alicante and the lovely Castle of Santa Barbara watches over it all. The Old Quarter (Barrio de la Cruz) is steeped in history and is very picturesque with many tiny houses climbing up the steep walls around the castle. Although Alicante is a busy commercial city and a University Town (plenty of young students to crank up the nightlife!), it has evolved into an important holiday centre.

The harbour in Alicante is a busy mishmash of expensive yachts and local fishing boats and the palm lined promenade is still the choice of all the locals to perform the evening “rambla”. See and be seen! Warm temperatures and a very dry climate make for pleasant days and evenings and Alicante remains popular for locals and international visitors to enjoy some downtime. Wander around the Old Quarter and soak up the atmosphere. The architecture is lovely with quaint houses and winding streets. Sta Barbara Castle is a beautiful building too and Postiguet beach just below it is a lovely choice for swimming and sunbathing and there are plenty of little open air cafes offering shade and cold drinks. Another lovely urban beach is a 3 km expanse of shimmering sand at San Juan overlooking Alicante Bay where the Mediterranean is clean and clear and there are lots of watersports.

A current, valid Passport is necessary for all visitors. Irish citizens do not require a visa, but other nationalities need to check with their own Embassy.
