Discover Holidays to Torrevieja
Meaning Old Tower in Spanish, the city of Torrevieja is one of Spain’s fastest growing tourist destinations today. Situated about 40 km south of Alicante on the Costa Blanca, Torrevieja is best known for its production of salt as it sits on two natural saltwater lakes in a lovely nature reserve. It’s only in more recent times that Torrevieja became known as a tourist hub and the very attractive harbour is now a focal point where the fishing boats fight for space with elaborate yachts and expensive craft. Fishing still keeps the city alive though, so the marinas will always have their share of local boats. The city has been very attractively developed and the local planners were very careful not to follow in Benidorm’s footsteps by building up. You won’t find skyscrapers on Torrevieja holidays. Architecture is more restrained and tasteful, making it a Costa Blanca success story.
A holiday in Torrevieja is more a Spanish experience than a real touristy one. Although the city is lovely and geared now for the international visitor, there is a genuine feel of tradition here that is lost in the more commercialised resorts. The beaches are brilliant though and Playa Los Locos, Playa del Cura, Playa Naufragos are all excellent and there are plenty more south of the city too. Torrevieja has the great good luck to enjoy on average 320 days sunshine per annum (no wonder half of Ireland de-camped there) and the climate is pleasantly dry too. Pubs, bars, cafes, shops and restaurants are on every street corner, so no lack of action day or night either.
A current, valid Passport is necessary for all visitors. Irish citizens do not require a visa, but other nationalities need to check with their own Embassy.
