Discover Holidays to Gran Canaria
There is little to say about Gran Canaria holidays that hasn’t been said before. A winter holiday destination like no other, the Canaries have been home to the Irish “snow birds” for so long that they are second home to many. Plopped in the Atlantic, north west of Africa’s tip, Gran Canaria is maybe the best known and definitely the best loved of the whole group. Totally reliant on its mild climate, the sun-starved wretches of northern Europe fill aircraft from the furthest reaches of Scandinavia and Shannon to lie on the fabulous beaches and bare all under a warm yellow sun. Holidaymakers used to love the Canary Islands for duty free shops too, but the biggest lure was always that notion of sunshine and an escape from our damp Irish winter. Christmas in the Canaries used to be an upmarket holiday for the rich and famous. Now, it’s a treat within the reach of everyone and, be honest, who wouldn’t love the idea of getting away from Christmas shopping and all the stress that it entails? – it’s probably easier on the pocket too.
Why do we love Gran Canaria holidays so much? Analyse it and the answer is simple – endless sunshine, permanent blue skies and sea the temperature of a lukewarm bath. The Irish influence on Gran Canaria has also been enormous. There are more Irish bars and pubs, shebeens and singing corners than you can shake a stick at and there are even restaurants that will make you wonder if you’ve ever left home! Ah yes, the craic is mighty in Gran Canaria. If you ever make it to the beach, there are some beauties. The dunes of Maspalomas are world famous where naturists can get their kit off without fear. The beach at Playa del Ingles is a stretch of silver white sand where the beds are comfy and the sea is safe and the man-made beach at Puerto Rico is clean and orderly and sheltered. All this and nightlife too, no big surprise that Gran Canaria is our all-time winter fave!
A current, valid Passport is required for all visitors. Irish citizens do not need a visa.
