Pretty Holidays in Puerto Rico
Considered by many to have some of the best weather on the Canary Island of Gran Canaria, Puerto Rico holidays are so popular with Irish visitors that some have been known to set up shop and never come home! Built around a natural harbour, the marina came first, then tourists sailed in and more again came to lie on the man-made beach and the rest, as they say, is history. It is only fair to say that Puerto Rico has been built into the rock and, as is pretty obvious when you arrive, it climbs high! Tiered and terraced, the hotels and apartments are like a half moon of white buildings leaning into the rocky face, all with bird’s eye views of the harbour below.
The resort of Puerto Rico is about a 20 minute drive through the coast road from Maspalomas and Playa del Ingles and the local bus trundles along about every 30 minutes. Almost bowl-shaped and cosy overlooking the marina, Puerto Rico holidays have evolved from a baby tourist centre to a full blown resort with lots of amenities. There are loads of shops, cafes and restaurants and, naturally, Irish pubs and music bars. The sandy beach has some lively beach shacks with sheltered seating to escape the sun and there must be a great recipe for Sangria because the entire population seems to love it! Only around the corner in the next bay, the resort of Mogan deserves your attention if only to admire the super-white houses, blue and green doors and scarlet geraniums – so twee and so pretty!
A current, valid Passport is necessary for all visitors to Gran Canaria. Irish citizens do not need a visa.
